A is for Avocado

I am a big fan of avocados. I don't really remember when I started enjoying this fruit but since first eating it I have become more attached. And I have learned that not only do avocados taste good, they are good for you and have multiple uses.
The simplest way to enjoy an avocado is to cut it up either lengthwise into slices or chopped up into chunks. You can put it on top of a salad for a great addition of flavor and even salt and pepper it to taste. Another option that I have used it for is to make dip:
Easy Avocado Dip
Take 1-2 avocados, cut in half lengthwise. Scoop out the big seed with a small teaspoon. Then carefully scoop around the edge of each half of the avocado to scoop out the "meat." Put the 2 halves in a small bowl. Mash the avocado halves with a fork. Add 1-2 teaspoons of sour cream--if you like Guacamole you can also add 1-2 teaspoons of ready made salsa. Stir. And voila you have a yummy dip you can serve with tortilla chips. I use Doritos for added flavor, yum!
You may also use this dip as a great addition to a layered bean dip. Layer re-fried beans, sour cream, cheese, salsa, and maybe even some seasoned ground beef for an awesome dip.
When buying an avocado I have learned to get a good one you have to be choosy. The best time to buy them in my opinion is when they are turning dark, not while they are still green because the greener ones are usually too hard. But if they have turned completely black in color then to me they are too ripe. And, they are more than likely on sale because they don't have much life left.
Another yummy option for using avocado is on top of a hamburger or lunch meat sandwich. The mashed avocado makes a great base for a vegetarian wrap or sandwich too. Just add more vegetables. And I have heard that you can use it for baby food!
The oil from the avocado is good for cooking. It is light and does not overpower other flavors. Avocado oil can also be used as a hair moisturizer as well as in products for your skin. It absorbs quickly and does not leave you feeling greasy. Mashed avocado is also a great addition to a natural hair conditioner or face mask.

I love avocados but I always seem to choose the unripe ones, now I shall look for the dark ones!
